Midnapore Lake was developed by Keith Construction, which also developed several other lake communities in Calgary. The creation of Lake Midnapore, one of Calgary’s most popular lake communities, added an exciting new chapter to a community that was already rich in tradition and historic significance. Lake Midnapore lies south of Fish Creek Provincial Park and on the East side of Macleod Trail. It borders Lake Sundance to the South.
Excavation of the lake took place between April 5 and July 31, 1976. A total of 1.5 million cubic yards were removed from the flat range land to create the 30 acre lake averaging 20 feet in depth and reaching 31 feet, and containing 165 million gallons of water. 300,000 cubic yards of earth were used to form the adjoining 55 foot high hill, the focal point of which is the waterfall over which 4,000 gallons of water per minute are circulated. It also creates the elevated hill side used for toboganning by winter time thrill seekers.
There are numerous year round activities and courses offered at the lake as well as the Mid-Sun Community Centre. Activities include swimming, beach sports, fishing, basketball & tennis courts, playgrounds, picnic tables and BBQ pits, canoes, paddle boats and fishing boats. Life jackets and oars are also offered to the boating enthusiasts. Winter time offers ice skating on the cleared pathway system around the lake, several hockey rinks with night lighting as well as the upper skating rink complete with gas fireplace and benches to warm up around. The indoor change facility offers lockers and washrooms and a warm place to stay inside and view the outdoor activities through large windows. In winter music is pumped through loud speakers at the rink and practically every tree on the property is adorned with colourful lights that help to set the festive seasonal mood for the residents and their guests enjoyment. Fishing is permitted without an Alberta fishing licence since this is a private lake. Limits to catch numbers are set by the Lake Association and fish are stocked yearly as part of a community event. The Midnapore Lake Residents Association (MLRA) is a not-for-profit association which owns, maintains and operates the facilities of the lake and park. Each residence is required to contribute to the assets of the MLRA each year to ensure the financial viability of the MLRA.
There is a large range of various types of housing and pricing in this Calgary lake community. A variety of affordable options of attached homes and apartment condominiums can be found in this lake community as well as a number of detached single family homes. There are also homes to suit the needs of those looking for an executive/estate style of living with gated luxury townhouse condominiums as well as detached homes that offer lake front lots with private lake docks or lots backing directly onto the escarpment of Fish Creek Provincial Park. The wild life and bike trails are numerous.
